We already know how to interact with the world around us: opening a book, switching on a light, closing a door. Many familiar digital interactions build on these everyday behaviors.
Here, I explore what else is possible. Starting from first principles, I identify the core intent behind a task and connect it to the most fitting mental model from everyday life, creating interactions that feel intuitive and playful.
Log a lift by setting up the gear
- Intent
- Record the weight and setup of my exercise.
- Mental model
- User already familiar with equipment setting in gym: plates determine the load, a pin selects resistance, and the backrest sets the angle.
Bookmark a moment in a video
- Intent
- Save an exact moment so I can return to it later.
- Mental model
- A bookmark marks a specific place without interrupting your reading. A video tab does the same for a moment in time.
Try Add a bookmark to your video.
Shape an AI voice with faders
- Intent
- Make an AI voice match the delivery I have in mind.
- Mental model
- Each fader controls one quality of a sound. Moving it up or down changes to what extent of that quality you hear.
Dial into the detail you need
- Intent
- Get the right amount of information from a section and dive deeper into details when needed.
- Mental model
- In camera, turning a lens ring brings a subject into focus. Here, the dial brings a selected section into greater detail.
Gather related notes with a magnet
- Intent
- Organize scattered notes by topic.
- Mental model
- A magnet draws certain materials toward it. Here, each magnet attracts notes that share a meaning.
Try Drag a magnet onto the board.
Collect and reuse with a clipboard inventory
- Intent
- When browsing information, keep several pieces of content handy and can re-use later.
- Mental model
- A game inventory holds collected items in visible slots, ready to pick up and use when needed.
Try Copy some content on the website.
Unpack possibilities from one prompt
- Intent
- Explore different visual directions before choosing one to develop.
- Mental model
- A card pack holds a set of unknown possibilities. Opening it reveals individual cards to inspect, compare, and keep.
Tear off a completed task
- Intent
- Mark a task complete and see what still needs doing.
- Mental model
- Tearing a slip from a pad physically separates what is finished from what remains.
